Hellenic Cables-Hellenic Cables and Alcoa strengthen EcoLum® partnership for third consecutive year

Meeting the growing demand for low-carbon wire and cable solutions

Athens, 3 October 2024

Hellenic Cables, the cables segment of Cenergy Holdings, and Alcoa Corporation continue to build on their partnership to advance the use of low carbon EcoLum ® aluminum in wire and cable used in renewable energy infrastructure, marking the third consecutive year of collaboration to enhance sustainability in renewable energy infrastructure and distribution.

Hellenic Cables and Alcoa have worked together since 2022, when the companies launched a collaboration to enhance sustainability in renewable energy infrastructure. The EcoLum® brand is part of Alcoa’s Sustana® family of low-carbon products, the most comprehensive in the aluminum industry, and has a carbon footprint that is approximately 3 times better than the industry average.

Both companies are working hard to provide more sustainable solutions for their customers and share in the belief that power infrastructure needs to be developed sustainably. These shared values have led to the evolution of that initial collaboration into a long-term partnership running beyond 2025. Hellenic Cables has embedded Alcoa’s EcoLum® aluminum into its manufacturing process, producing low-carbon submarine and land cables for wind farms and solar power installations across Europe.

This strategic integration has reduced the embedded carbon emissions of Hellenic Cables’s products and has significantly lowered its value chain emissions (Scope 3), which also enables the company to provide the option to its customers to offer cable products with a significantly lower carbon footprint. Moreover, this partnership aligns seamlessly with the company’s ambitions for greenhouse gas reduction, further supporting global decarbonization efforts.

“Our partnership with Hellenic Cables is impactful because it underpins the strategic role of low-carbon aluminum to deliver clean energy technologies and lower our customers’ and their customers’ carbon footprints,” said Renato Bacchi, Alcoa’s Chief Commercial Officer. “By supplying EcoLum® products to Hellenic Cables, we are helping to build a more sustainable energy infrastructure in enabling low carbon energy to flow around Europe using low carbon materials.”

“Adherence to sustainability principles is core to our strategy, and partnering with Alcoa has been transformative for us,” said Kostas Savvakis, General Manager at Hellenic Cables. “The use of Alcoa’s EcoLum® aluminum has enabled us to offer power cable solutions with a significantly lower carbon footprint, reinforcing our commitment to sustainable manufacturing and environmental stewardship.”
